Did you know that birthday presents were linked to the advent of birth registers and calendars? In Switzerland, ecclesiastics were already recording baptisms and marriages in the 15th century. From the end of the 18th century onwards, municipalities took over the task of keeping civil registers, with a few twists and turns later on. But the most important thing was that birthdays were now known and could (at last!) be celebrated, with presents of course.

Evolving traditions
Jubilee gifts mark anniversaries – birth, coming of age, passing of the decade – as well as religious and corporate events. New occasions even continue to emerge, as customs and habits change. Among the most recent in Switzerland are birth gifts for mothers – also known as “push presents” because of their Anglo-Saxon origin. In the UK and India, these gifts have been part of the custom for centuries.

One event, many possibilities
“The range of anniversary gifts is as varied as the occasions and personalities involved. While it’s now easy to do some preliminary research on the Internet, individualized in-store advice can help you make the right choice, and sometimes even radically change your mind about the first idea,” notes Julien Meylan. Jubilee gifts are often an opportunity to opt for truly lasting objects that remain part of the family heritage”. A gift to take particular care with, right from the moment of selection!

A family heritage

A family heritage
Jubilee jewelry and watches are an integral part of family histories. While the symbol remains forever, these finery items sometimes prove more difficult to wear as fashions change – or to share equally.
“In this case, we can transform the jewelry. From a set of diamonds, for example, we made four necklaces for the owner’s four granddaughters,” explains Julien Meylan.

What a gift for…

A birth?
“Baby bracelets are very popular. We also like to focus on the tradition of solid silver services. Children as young as one year old can use them. And did you know that this charming custom has a real purpose? Silver has antiseptic properties: microbes are more easily eliminated following falls on the floor – and this often happens with little ones! smiles Julien Meylan. What’s more, they can be passed on from generation to generation.

Communion and confirmation?
These religious events are usually symbolized by a gold chain with a cross for the former, and by a watch – often the first significant watch in a lifetime – for the latter.

Is it the age of majority, the baccalaureate or the bachelor’s degree?
“When younger people want a watch, we guide them towards a model that suits their lifestyle. Unsurprisingly, some brands are more resistant to daredevils than others – I myself had a vocation as a stuntman when I was younger, so I’m pretty good at giving advice in this area! If necessary, we take the opportunity to explain the difference in obsolescence that exists between a mechanical watch – which can be kept for life – and a connected watch – which will have a lifespan of more or less two years”, emphasizes Yannick Meylan.

Dozens of passages?
The changeover from one decade to the next is often an opportunity to make a major purchase, especially when it comes to fine watches. Do certain brands or models appeal more to certain ages? “Not necessarily. If you’re planning a surprise, it’s best to carefully investigate the recipient’s wishes. The best thing is to choose with them, so that they really like it for a long time,” explains Yannick Meylan. If you want to keep the surprise effect and the object is not personalized, it can of course be exchanged.
