Zircon versus zirconia

ZIRCON
The name of this fine stone of natural origin derives from the Persian “zargûn” meaning “golden”. It also has an etymological root in the Arabic word “zarqun”, meaning “cinnabar”, a vermilion-red pigment. Zircon is a naturally occurring zirconium silicate found in Cambodia, Burma, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Tanzania and even the Haute-Loire in minute quantities. Zircon is believed to be the oldest known terrestrial object, since a specimen dating back 4 billion years was found in Australia in 1999.

ZIRCONIA
Also known as cubic zirconia or CZ, zirconia is a synthetic stone derived from zirconium oxide. Generally usedin jewelry to imitate diamonds, zirconia has been produced mainly in China, the United States and Russia in large volumes since the 1970s.
